Can you visit Annecy on foot in one day?
Yes. The historic centre is compact: Lac Annecy Tourisme offers a 1.6 km historical walk through the old town, rated very easy, to be done in 1 hour 30, with free access all year. The Jardins de l’Europe, on the lakeside, are a stone’s throw from the old town. The tourist office also recommends avoiding the car in the town centre.
Our advice: keep two areas, the old town and then the lakeside, and a single indoor visit. The only real climb is the one to the castle. Start with the canals, in the maze of lanes and bridges, and keep the lakeside lawns for the end of the day.

Where should you start the morning in Annecy?
Start with the Thiou, the river through which the lake drains, and with the Palais de l’Île, set on its rocky island. From Pont Perrière you have the view the tourist office describes as the most picturesque in the old town. In the Middle Ages, craftsmen settled along this river to use its power: wheels and mills gave the town a manufacturing character very early on.
Then continue to Porte Perrière, for centuries the town’s main entrance for anyone arriving from Italy; look on the gate for the trout of the municipal coat of arms. Another surviving gate, Porte Sainte-Claire, keeps its wide pointed archway and its machicolations. Between the two, let the lanes and arcades carry you along.

How do you continue to Annecy castle?
From Porte Perrière, the Côte Perrière climbs to the castle. The slope is steep, and the tourist office warns that the castle stairway has many steps on the way down. At the top, the 13th-century Tour de la Reine is the oldest part: its walls are up to 4.5 m thick.
The residence of the counts of Geneva in the 13th and 14th centuries, the castle served as barracks until 1947; the town bought it in 1953 and opened a museum there three years later. Lac Annecy Tourisme allows about 60 minutes for the visit and lists it as closed on Tuesdays. On the way back down, pass Saint-Pierre Cathedral: built around 1535 for Franciscans, it almost immediately became the provisional cathedral of the bishops of Geneva, who took refuge in Annecy after the Reformation.

What should you do in the afternoon by Lake Annecy?
Head for the Jardins de l’Europe, an English-style park on the lakeside: small plaques name the trees. Then cross the Pont des Amours, an iron footbridge from 1907: on one side the lake and the mountains, on the other the Vassé canal under its vault of plane trees.
You reach the Pâquier, a seven-hectare lawn open to the lake. Its name means “pasture”; an orientation table names the summits. This part needs neither ticket nor timetable: lengthen or shorten it according to your legs.

And if it rains in Annecy?
Reverse the day and start indoors: the Palais de l’Île, with its cells and the rooms of the former courthouse, then the Musée-Château. Both are listed as closed on Tuesdays: check opening times before you walk up. Lac Annecy Tourisme also invites you to step inside the old town’s churches, which it presents as a district of five bell towers.
Street Whisperer tells the story of the places around you as you walk and answers your questions on the spot; the app replaces neither official opening times nor a qualified guide. Plan an internet connection for new stories.
