Self-guided walking tour of London: a City walk

For a self-guided London walk, stay in one area. Our suggestion connects St Paul’s, The Monument and the Thames, with observations from public spaces. Allow roughly two hours for walking and pauses; this editorial estimate excludes indoor visits, climbing The Monument and travelling to the City.

01

Which order should you walk in?

Start outside St Paul’s, then follow public pedestrian routes towards Cannon Street and Fish Street Hill. Your second stop is The Monument. Finish on the north bank of the Thames near London Bridge. Check each connection in an up-to-date walking navigation tool: these stops do not replace street directions or local diversions.

Outside the cathedral, choose one view of the silhouette and one façade detail. At The Monument, compare the column with neighbouring buildings. By the river, notice how distance changes your reading of shapes. This observation theme is our suggestion and includes no indoor admission.

02

What does The Monument tell you?

The memorial refers to the Great Fire of 1666. Building began in 1671 and finished in 1677. Our four-chapter place journal connects that history with the visible building and helps you look more closely at its details.

This walk looks at the monument from outside. If you choose to climb it, allow a separate ticketed visit and check the day’s arrangements. The climb is optional: you can continue walking after looking from ground level.

03

How do you reach the start and plan access?

Choose transport to St Paul’s around where you are staying. Visit London gathers official transport and walking maps. For accessibility, check the actual route and station access you need; a nearby station name does not establish a step-free journey.

If you have only an hour, keep one main stop and a short extension. For a longer visit, choose one interior in advance and consult its own website. The City visitor information centre also offers themed self-guided walks.
