Self-guided or guided tour: which should you choose?

Choose a self-guided visit to control your stops and pace; a guided tour to exchange with a person and follow a led route; or a venue’s own guide to explore its collections in depth. The best choice depends on the outing rather than a universal ranking.

When should you choose a self-guided visit?

Do you have an uncertain time slot, like stopping at details or want to decide as you walk? A self-guided visit provides that freedom. It also means choosing subjects and checking access yourself. An editorial route can provide a starting point without obliging you to finish every stop. For a short trial, choose one place and one question.

Street Whisperer offers nearby places, audio stories and questions to the guide on iPhone and Android. The interface, stories and voices are available in 15 languages. Stories are AI-generated and may contain errors: check essential information with venues. That belongs in your decision alongside language and duration.

When does a guided tour add more?

Do you want to speak with a person, follow a visit designed for a group or join a route organised by a venue? Explore guided visits. Before booking, check the subject, language, duration, starting point and access arrangements. An app and a guide offer different services and may complement each other during a stay.

In a museum, start with the venue’s resources: labels, plans, interpretation and scheduled tours. These are tied to its collections and access conditions. An app should not be presented as the venue’s official guide or partner without an agreement establishing that.

What should you compare before downloading an app?

Check what works without internet, what requires an account, what the free offer includes and how information is produced. A general promise of a “free guide” does not establish how many visits are included or whether they renew. Test the start-up process and the usefulness of one story before planning the whole outing around a tool.

Street Whisperer includes 7 free visits and 7 free questions once, without expiry, with or without an account. New stories and voices need an internet connection. Purchases require an account; local conditions and prices appear in the store. No subscription is needed to try the initial offer.

04

How should you prepare a useful first trial?

Choose a city in our walk finder, then a place matching your time and interests. On site, first look without a screen: a façade detail, the shape of a square or a sculpted gesture. In the app, open Explore, select the place and start the story. Then ask a question about something you actually noticed.

Website routes are planning resources separate from walks generated in the app. They are not automatically imported. If you need a route with confirmed accessibility, expert-validated content or fully offline exploration, check those requirements with your chosen service before leaving.

Your questions, answered.

Can you plan without downloading the app?

Yes. The guides and walk finder remain freely available on the website. The app extends discovery on site with its own features.
