What can you see in an hour?
Our route connects Place du Bourg-de-Four, Saint-Pierre Cathedral, Maison Tavel, Promenade de la Treille and Parc des Bastions. The hour is for walking and looking from outside. Pick one detail at each stop: a square’s shape, a façade or the relationship between a promenade and the landscape.
Geneva Tourism describes the old town as a network of paved lanes, squares and monuments dominated by Saint-Pierre. For a short first visit it forms a coherent area: there is no need to squeeze the lake and international Geneva into the same time slot.
02
What should you choose with half a day?
Add a visit that matches your interests. Saint-Pierre extends the religious and architectural story; its towers and archaeological site have their own visiting arrangements. Maison Tavel offers another perspective on urban history. Check opening times and tickets directly with each place.
One indoor visit keeps the pace comfortable. Leave room for a pause on the Treille before continuing towards Bastions. Looking matters as much as moving: a historical walk loses its purpose if every stop becomes a photograph taken while passing.
The next place has a story.

03
How should you account for the slopes?
The old town sits on a hill. Reaching Bourg-de-Four from Molard or Rive involves going uphill; continuing towards Bastions involves descending. Paved streets and possible steps require a suitable choice of path. Our route is not an accessibility audit.
With a pushchair or mobility aid, check a suitable path before setting out and reduce the number of stops if needed. An estimated walking time does not predict everyone’s pace. If weather makes the paving uncomfortable, favour an indoor visit confirmed open.
04
Should you choose between the old town and the lake?
For an hour, focus on the old town. With half a day, explore the district first, then decide between a museum and a lakeside walk. The lake is a separate extension of our route, with its own travel time and pauses.
