Genève / Plan your visit

What can you do in Geneva’s Old Town when it rains?

On a rainy day in Geneva’s Old Town, make Maison Tavel your indoor stop if it is open, then choose a short discovery around Saint-Pierre. Save the Treille and viewpoints for a break in the rain. This plan focuses on the Old Town, avoiding journeys between distant museums.

01

Why start with Maison Tavel?

Maison Tavel connects the old city with everyday life. Its value is the context it gives the streets you walk through, beyond providing shelter. Choose a visiting question: how was the city arranged before it expanded? The Magnin relief map provides a concrete starting point for looking at Geneva’s layout before its fortifications were demolished.

Read the plan first, then select a theme or accessible floor. With children, look for a difference between the represented city and the one you walk through today. This is an editorial suggestion, not a replacement for museum explanations or visitor instructions. Leave time for moving between levels and taking a break.

Saint-Pierre: which part do you want to visit?

Distinguish entering the cathedral, climbing towards viewpoints and visiting the archaeological site. These are different experiences with access and conditions to check. In rain, first choose your subject: the religious space or the remains beneath the cathedral. Do not fit all these visits into a time allowance intended for a simple walk.

Geneva Tourism includes Saint-Pierre’s archaeological site among its rainy-day activities. That makes it an option to investigate, not a guarantee that it will be open when you arrive. Check tickets and arrangements for the day. Inside the cathedral, respect services and restricted spaces; visiting comes after the venue’s primary use.

How can you shorten the walk without losing its thread?

Keep the Maison Tavel–Saint-Pierre area at the centre of your outing. In steady rain, head directly to your chosen venue. When the weather clears, resume a section of the Old Town walk and study one façade detail before moving on. You do not need to reach every stop to connect a house, a square and a monument.

The Treille promenade is outdoors. Treat it as an optional pause depending on the weather, rather than a necessary stop for completing the walk. Slopes and surfaces may affect walking comfort; check suitable access if you use a pushchair or mobility aid.

What should you plan for a short visit or half a day?

For a short visit, choose one indoor experience and leave time for entry. For half a day, our suggestion is a museum, a break and a short neighbourhood discovery when the rain eases. Our route durations are editorial estimates for outdoor walks; they exclude museums, climbs and queuing.

Your questions, answered.

Can you explore the entire Old Town under cover?

No. Journeys between venues and promenades remain outdoors. An indoor visit can anchor the day, with a short walk when conditions allow.
