Paris / Plan your visit

What can you see in Le Marais in half a day?

Start with an hour on foot between Hôtel de Sens and Carnavalet, then choose one museum. Place des Vosges is the central pause. Half a day combines streets, architecture and an indoor visit without turning the district into a checklist.

01

What order should you follow?

Follow our existing route: Hôtel de Sens, Saint-Paul–Saint-Louis, Hôtel de Sully, Place des Vosges and Musée Carnavalet. It covers about 1.8 km. The suggested hour includes stops outside the buildings; it excludes museum visits, queues and a long lunch.

This direction lets you compare forms: the silhouette of Hôtel de Sens, the church façade, Sully’s sequence of courtyard and garden, then the square’s regular composition. If Sully’s passage is closed, reach the square via Rue de Birague. You can still follow the walk from public streets.

02

Carnavalet or the Maison de Victor Hugo?

Choose Carnavalet to put the district in the context of Paris history. Its permanent collections are free; check the museum website for exhibitions and entry arrangements. Set aside separate time for the galleries: the walking route ends outside the museum, rather than after visiting its collections.

Choose the Maison de Victor Hugo for a visit focused on a writer and his world. Hugo lived at 6 Place des Vosges from 1832 to 1848. This keeps you near the square instead of trying to fit in two museums. Check the official visitor information before finalising your plan.

03

How should you divide the time?

Our editorial suggestion is an hour for the walk, a pause in Place des Vosges and then a museum chosen around your interests. Add time for getting there and queuing. If you like sketching or photography, reduce the number of stops rather than the time spent looking.

With children, keep the observation game simple: find a turret, compare an arcade with a window and spot repeated details on a façade. In rain, favour a museum confirmed open and a shorter walk; the arcades do not make the whole route sheltered.

04

What should you prepare?

Use Saint-Paul or Sully–Morland depending on where you start. Check the square’s and your chosen museum’s opening times for your visiting day. Some streets have paving stones and narrow pavements: distance alone does not establish comfort with a pushchair or mobility aid.

Your questions, answered.

Can you explore Le Marais without a ticket?

The outdoor route follows public streets. Museums and passages have their own entry conditions. Carnavalet’s permanent collections are free.

Does the one-hour walk include museums?

No. The hour covers walking and looking at the buildings outside. Allow extra time for an indoor visit.
