Amsterdam Light Festival: a walk in Amsterdam

Keep the evening for the official light route. For a separate heritage walk, connect the Carré area, Magere Brug and the Amstel quays. This outdoor suggestion accompanies Amsterdam Light Festival. The official programme remains the reference for routes and open buildings.

01

Which walking route should you choose?

Allow roughly 60 to 90 minutes to walk and observe these landmarks, excluding visits and transport. This is editorial guidance, to adjust to your pace.

The stops are editorial suggestions from public spaces. Adapt them to closures, weather and your mobility. Indoor visits and waiting time add to the walk.

02

What stands before you

Magere Brug provides a stop at a white drawbridge. Observe its silhouette from the riverbank before making it a photo stop.

03

Its story

The bridge was renewed and widened in 1934 to Piet Kramer's designs. Its old-fashioned appearance is also the result of reconstruction.

04

Look at this

Spot the mechanism's elements and the symmetry of the two halves. These bridge details are independent of the installations chosen for any festival edition.

05

What most people never learn

The bridge remained manually operated until 1994. The municipal website explains its mechanisation: an old setting can conceal modernised infrastructure.
